Introduction to Mindfulness
Mindfulness is “paying attention to the present moment in a particular way, on purpose and non-judgmentally” - John Kabat-Zinn. In other words, it is a way of being present for the moments in your life rather than always on autopilot. It is a simple practice that has been used for thousands of years to manage the incessantly racing thoughts we all live with and the corresponding stress it causes in our lives. Most of us are aware that the fast pace of our current culture causes a lot of stress, and that it has negative consequences on our health and relationships. Many of us are in a constant state of movement reacting to loved ones in ways we keep meaning to change. Mindfulness can’t take away your stressors, but it can give you the tools to manage them more skillfully.
“Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth
and our freedom.”
-Victor Frankl-
“I realized through practicing Mindfulness that there actually IS a space between when something happens or someone says something, and I then respond. If I can learn to pause long enough in that space (ie Mindfulness), my response will be drastically different and more in line with who I want to be.” - Julie Maus
